Post NaNoWriMo!

I’m thankful to have gotten through another year of NaNoWriMo and crossed the finish line on my fifty thousand words. My story, currently titled Emerald Dreams, is not quite done, but I hope to finish up the loose ends rather soon and start the editing process.

One thing I love about NaNoWriMo is that it encourages writers to free ourselves of our inhibitions and write without the inner editor taking over and convincing us that our manuscripts are not good enough, pointing out plot holes and other pitfalls. While this is my fourth November as a participant, it wasn’t until this year that I truly experienced this kind of freedom. I’ve heard others talk about it but could manage to get there. It felt as if my inner editor was here to stay. But once I had tasted sweet freedom for myself, there was no going back. I wrote three thousand words a day. It’s amazing how quickly they go by without worrying about perfection! I also had other projects to work on in order to diversify my focus, which only made each project more rewarding because I wasn’t dwelling on the same plot lines every time I wrote. Each of my writings became faster and easier. I’m now convinced that writing every day, even if it is just one paragraph when other things interfere with time, will help me continue writing and improving in effectiveness and comfort.

As always, I encourage anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to write a novel in thirty days or less to visit http://www.nanowrimo.org and check it out!
